Last Tuesday, I was sitting in my favorite armchair reading a book when I saw something strange. Out of the corner of my left eye, there was a quick flicker, almost like a tiny bolt of lightning or someone flicking a flashlight on and off. I blinked a few times, thinking it was just a reflection from the window, but then it happened again. It’s a bit unnerving when your eyes start playing tricks on you, isn’t it?
I’ve had floaters for years—those little ‘cobwebs’ that drift around—but these flashes felt different. I remembered my sister mentioning something similar a few years ago, and she ended up having a small tear in her retina. I didn’t want to overreact, but at 62, I’ve learned that “waiting and seeing” isn’t always the best strategy for health. I ended up calling my optometrist, and they squeezed me in for an emergency exam that afternoon.
The good news is that it was just a “posterior vitreous detachment,” which sounds scary but is actually a normal part of aging for many of us. However, the doctor told me I was right to come in immediately because those flashes can also be a sign of a detached retina, which is a real emergency. My takeaway? If you see new flashes or a sudden “curtain” over your vision, don’t wait until Monday. Call the doctor right away.
What would you have done in my shoes? Have any of you experienced these strange light shows, and how did you handle the anxiety of waiting for the doctor’s appointment?
