I am a textbook yo-yo dieter—I usually spend six months losing weight and the following year and a half putting it back on. During my 20s, I would just eat less and hit the gym. I eventually realized I hated the gym, so by my 30s, I switched to a routine of calorie restriction combined with walking.
I realize this cycle of weight fluctuation isn’t healthy, but I couldn’t wrap my head around never being able to grab drinks with friends or eat my favorite meals again. So, I just kept up with this 6/18 month pattern.
I started a new round of dieting last year and gave keto a shot. Those ‘6 months on’ were fantastic; it was honestly the most effective diet I’ve ever tried. However, once I stopped, the weight came back at an alarming rate. I gained about 20 pounds in just two months. It got so bad that I had to go back on the diet for another two months just so my clothes would fit for a planned vacation. I stopped again in mid-November for the holiday season, and the exact same thing happened. By the end of February, I was heavier than when I first started.
I’ve never experienced such rapid weight gain before. I don’t think I’m eating or drinking more than I did in previous cycles. Maybe it’s just a part of being in my 40s now, or perhaps I’m less active than I assume, or maybe my calorie intake is higher than I realize. I understand that the basic science of it is pretty straightforward.
Anyway, I’m back on keto now and trying to figure out what my plan will be six months from now. . . . .
