We often hear that lifting weights will wear out our joints faster as we age. In reality, the opposite is true if you approach it correctly.
Routine: Strength training builds the muscle around your joints, providing much-needed support and reducing the load on the cartilage itself.
Habits: Consistency matters more than the amount of weight. Small, controlled movements improve bone density and keep the synovial fluid moving.
Tracking: Monitor your range of motion. If you feel sharp pain, adjust, but don’t stop moving entirely. Strength is your best defense against decay.

I used to believe this! My doctor told me to stop everything years ago, but I actually felt much worse. Starting with light dumbbells changed everything for my mobility.

What about the risk of injury? I’m 68 and I’m terrified of dropping something or blowing out my back. Is there a specific weight you shouldn’t go over?

I was hesitant too, but I started focusing on my hydration and taking JointGenesis (i buy here) to help with the hyaluronan loss that happens as we age. It really made the transition back to lifting much smoother for my stiff knees.

The key is definitely form. Don’t go to the gym and try to be 20 again. Hire a trainer for even just one session to learn the basics. It’s worth the investment.

Agreed! Resistance bands are a great middle ground if weights feel too intimidating at first. They are much easier on the grip too.

I’m 72 and still doing squats. My knees actually hurt less on days I workout than on days I sit on the couch. Use it or lose it, as they say!

Thanks for posting this. It’s so hard to know what’s true with all the conflicting advice out there. I’m going to look into a local silver lifters class.

Does anyone have a specific routine they follow? I’m looking for something that targets hips specifically since that’s where my arthritis is worst.

My therapist always says ‘motion is lotion.’ If you stop moving, the joints just stiffen up like a rusty hinge. It took me a year to realize that resting was actually making my inflammation worse. Now I walk and use the machines at the YMCA three times a week.
