How I finally improved my balance this year?

After a close call on the stairs last winter, I decided I needed to get serious about my balance. It’s something we often ignore until it’s too late. I’ve spent the last six months following a simple routine that has made a world of difference in how steady I feel on my feet.

First, start with a “brushing teeth” challenge. Every morning and night, try standing on one leg while you brush. Use the counter for support if you need to, but aim for thirty seconds per side. It’s an easy way to build ankle stability without taking extra time out of your day.

Second, incorporate heel-to-toe walking. I do this down the hallway a few times a day. Imagine you are on a tightrope, placing the heel of one foot directly in front of the toes of the other.

Finally, don’t skip the strength work. Simple calf raises and squats have helped my core and legs stay firm. If you’re feeling wobbly, give these a shot.

Good stuff. I’ve been worried about this since I turned 60.

Does the one-leg thing get easier? I tried it this morning and almost tipped over into the shower curtain!

It definitely gets easier. I started using a balance board while watching the evening news. It’s amazing how much the small stabilizer muscles in your ankles matter. Keep at it, OP.

Are you doing any specific footwear changes too? I find my sneakers are better than being barefoot for these exercises.

My wife makes fun of me for the hallway walking, calls it my “catwalk,” but I haven’t tripped on the rug in months. It works.

This is actually great advice for proprioception. As we age, the signals from our feet to our brain slow down. These drills help retrain those pathways and prevent nasty falls.

Thanks for the motivation. I’m starting the tooth-brushing challenge tonight.
