How can we easily add balance training to our routine?

Getting older means our balance isn’t what it used to be, and a fall is the last thing any of us needs. I’ve started a couple of small habits that don’t take extra time but really seem to help.

First, I stand on one leg while I’m brushing my teeth—thirty seconds each side. It’s harder than it sounds!

Second, I do a “tightrope walk” down the hallway once a day, placing one foot directly in front of the other. It’s a simple way to stay steady on my feet without hitting the gym.

The tooth brushing trick is a classic. I’ve been doing that for a month and I can definitely feel the difference in my ankles.

I actually had a nasty slip on the ice last winter, and my PT told me exactly the same thing about the heel-to-toe walking. It feels silly at first, like you’re performing a sobriety test in your own house, but it works. I also try to stand on one leg while the coffee is brewing. Every little bit counts when you’re over 60.

Do you hold onto the counter while you do the teeth thing? I’m worried about tipping over.

I tried the one-leg thing this morning and nearly took out the towel rack. Maybe I’ll start by just hovering my foot!

Great suggestions. I also like to do a few calf raises while I’m waiting for the mail or standing in line at the grocery store. It builds that lower leg strength which is so key for staying upright.
