Experiencing sleep onset arousal and meta-cognitive awareness

My sleep has been awful lately. It’s taking a toll on my skin, and I feel like I’m falling apart. I’m not getting any actual deep, restorative rest, even though I have so many responsibilities and I’m on the verge of burning out. Right now, I’m stuck at an airport with a six-hour delay, trying and failing to sleep on a bench. I’ve got a meeting in NYC with our new CEO that I need to be ‘on’ for.

I’ve struggled with sleep since I was an infant, so my mother started me on melatonin. I’ve been using it ever since.

I’ve experimented with a few medications like hydroxyzine, which left me groggy, and clonidine, though I’m not sure if that one did anything.

I was tempted to take an oxycodone the other night, but I managed to resist.

I just dropped a grand on various sleep gadgets: a tracking wristband, a device for vagus nerve stimulation, a vibrating chest tool for anxiety, plus high-end earplugs and a sleep mask.

I’m feeling desperate and my anxiety is peaking. I’m grateful for my life, so I don’t get why this is happening or how to fix it besides just hoping for the best.

When I lie down, I’m hyper-aware of everything around me and my whole house. My mind jumps between a million topics while music loops in my head. I try to stay calm so I don’t spike my cortisol and make things worse.

Why is something that should be so natural proving to be so difficult?

I take supplements like fish oil, NR, and turmeric, I stay active, and I eat well… I just don’t get it. My mind won’t shut down for even a moment. It’s constantly planning and worrying, and it’s exhausting me.

The root of the problem seems to be your anxiety and overactive mind. If your mind is racing at night, it’s likely happening during the day too. Your nervous system might be trapped in a fight-or-flight state without you realizing it. Try to catch yourself when you’re ruminating during the day. Label the thoughts—like ‘I’m thinking about work’—and then let them pass. If they’re vital, write them down and then release them. I find taking deep breaths throughout the day helps keep me grounded in the moment. Consider trying meditation, yoga, or deep breathing. You’ll probably find it annoying at first because it’s so different from your usual state, but you’ll see improvements after a few days. If you want a faster solution and mindfulness isn’t your thing, maybe look into GABA Soothe on Amazon. Good luck!

That sounds awful, I’m sorry. A six-hour delay is rough, and I definitely wouldn’t be able to sleep in an airport either.

Talk to a medical professional about what treatment paths you can take.

I just wanted to reach out because I’m dealing with the exact same issues: sleep onset hyper-arousal and meta-cognitive awareness. It feels a bit like a bad trip. I’ve been struggling with this since late 2024. Magnesium glycinate has provided some minor relief for me. While I usually sleep okay at night, napping is impossible because of this. I’ve just accepted that naps aren’t happening for the foreseeable future and I’m just pushing through with tired eyes.
