However, as I look into the actual mechanics of these claims, the evidence seems a bit more complicated than the marketing suggests.
The core argument for these exercises—often rooted in the century-old Bates Method—is that the muscles surrounding the eye become weak or strained, and by ‘retraining’ them, we can reshape the eye or improve its focusing power. From a physiological standpoint, we know that the extraocular muscles control movement, while the ciliary muscle controls the shape of the lens. In theory, keeping muscles active is generally good for the body. But when we talk about age-related vision loss, we aren’t usually talking about muscle weakness. Presbyopia, for instance, is primarily caused by the lens of the eye hardening over time, making it less flexible. No amount of ‘weightlifting’ for your eyes can easily change the physical protein structure of a hardening lens.
That said, I have observed that some people report genuine improvements in their ‘functional’ vision. This is where the uncertainty lies. Is it possible that these exercises aren’t changing the shape of the eye, but rather teaching the brain to process blurred images more effectively? This concept, known as perceptual learning, is a recognized phenomenon in neuroscience. It doesn’t mean your eyes are ‘healed,’ but your brain might be getting better at interpreting the data it receives. Additionally, for those of us spending hours on computers, simple movements like the 20-20-20 rule or palming can significantly reduce digital eye strain. Relieving strain can make your vision feel sharper simply because your eyes aren’t exhausted, but that’s a far cry from reversing a prescription.
