Do eye exercises actually improve vision?

Over the last few years, I’ve noticed an uptick in advertisements and social media influencers claiming that we can ‘restore’ our eyesight through various eye exercises or ‘eye yoga.’ For those of us in our 50s and 60s dealing with the inevitable onset of presbyopia or the worsening of long-term myopia, the idea of ditching our bifocals is certainly appealing. However, as I look into the actual mechanics of these claims, the evidence seems a bit more complicated than the marketing suggests.

The core argument for these exercises—often rooted in the century-old Bates Method—is that the muscles surrounding the eye become weak or strained, and by ‘retraining’ them, we can reshape the eye or improve its focusing power. From a physiological standpoint, we know that the extraocular muscles control movement, while the ciliary muscle controls the shape of the lens. In theory, keeping muscles active is generally good for the body. But when we talk about age-related vision loss, we aren’t usually talking about muscle weakness. Presbyopia, for instance, is primarily caused by the lens of the eye hardening over time, making it less flexible. No amount of ‘weightlifting’ for your eyes can easily change the physical protein structure of a hardening lens.

That said, I have observed that some people report genuine improvements in their ‘functional’ vision. This is where the uncertainty lies. Is it possible that these exercises aren’t changing the shape of the eye, but rather teaching the brain to process blurred images more effectively? This concept, known as perceptual learning, is a recognized phenomenon in neuroscience. It doesn’t mean your eyes are ‘healed,’ but your brain might be getting better at interpreting the data it receives. Additionally, for those of us spending hours on computers, simple movements like the 20-20-20 rule or palming can significantly reduce digital eye strain. Relieving strain can make your vision feel sharper simply because your eyes aren’t exhausted, but that’s a far cry from reversing a prescription.

Did you see a measurable change in your next optometry appointment, or was the benefit mostly subjective? I tried a specific ‘natural vision’ course for about six months during lockdown. To be honest, my optometrist said my prescription didn’t change at all, but I definitely felt less tired after a day of reading. It’s more like physical therapy for strain than a cure for nearsightedness.

Total snake oil if you ask me. If this actually worked, every eye doctor would be out of a job and the insurance companies would be forcing us to do it instead of paying for surgeries. Just buy the glasses and enjoy being able to see.

I think people confuse ‘relief from strain’ with ‘fixing vision.’ I do some basic stretches every morning and it helps with that dry, gritty feeling I get, but I still need my +2.00 readers for the newspaper. It’s about comfort, not correction.

My sister-in-law claims she lowered her prescription by doing ‘sunning’ and ‘palming.’ I’m skeptical but she’s very persistent about it. Does anyone know if there’s any danger in doing these?

As a retired ophthalmology tech, we used to see patients come in with these claims all the time. Usually, they just learned to squint better or unintentionally memorized the lines on the eye chart. The physical anatomy of the eye, especially the lens hardening, doesn’t really respond to ‘gym’ work like a bicep does. Science just isn’t there for the Bates method.

The point about perceptual learning is really interesting. The brain is a powerful thing. If you think you see better, you might navigate the world with more confidence, even if the optical focus is still technically off. It’s a fascinating debate, but I wouldn’t bet my driver’s license on it without a real exam.
