Dealing with Alcoholic Neuropathy at age 21

My physician mentioned he’s never encountered such severe nerve damage in someone my age. Now I’ve got to visit a damn specialist since I’ve lost all sensation from the calves down in both legs, and I’m walking like a total wreck.

That’s definitely a bad situation.

Yeah… have you considered other substances? They’d likely take longer to finish you off than the bottle. Clearly, alcohol doesn’t sit well with your system.

I dealt with serious neuropathy in my feet that messed up my gait. It actually cleared up after I quit drinking, so don’t lose heart.

Man, I’m really sorry. I was around 25 when I got diagnosed. It’s spread above my knees now and is starting in my hands. I agree with what everyone else mentioned regarding B vitamins.

Try your absolute hardest to quit the booze. You really don’t want this nerve damage to become permanent. Sending you the best.

Alcohol-induced neuropathy is serious business. Besides the intense numbness and pain, you risk getting infections you can’t even feel. You don’t want to turn out like that streamer Onlyusemeblade, who lost his toes to amputation because he ignored his neuropathy.

Research Wernicke-Korsakoff syndrome. It can lead to irreversible early-onset dementia. Take this as a serious warning sign.

Don’t stress too much; my entire left arm and hand were numb, but after three months of sobriety, it improved significantly. Now, nearly a year later, the numbness only returns in extreme cold.

If it’s any consolation, my symptoms vanished and didn’t come back after just a few weeks of being sober. They claim it’s permanent, and perhaps it is for some, but I’ve seen that it doesn’t have to be.

I knew someone who dealt with that at 22. She ended up needing a complete liver transplant by the time she was 26.

I was diagnosed with neuropathy in my feet at 30, and the neurologist put me on a high dose of gabapentin, which relieved the pain almost instantly. I’m 34 now and only experience minor tingling occasionally. Gabapentin is also used for seizures!

Man, that’s rough for someone your age. Some people just have bad luck genetically when it comes to how alcohol wrecks the body. Stay safe.

I developed alcohol-related neuropathy in my feet when I was 19. It’s absolutely terrible. I’m currently on the maximum dosage of pregabalin.

Begin taking a B-complex and about six B1 supplements daily. Your body’s ability to absorb nutrients is garbage during a binge, so you need high doses. Ideally, get B vitamins via IV or injection for better absorption. It’s doubtful you’ve reached an irreversible point at your age; I’m skeptical that alcohol is the sole cause since you’re so young, but it’s definitely making things worse.
