Many of us over 50 start skipping lunch or dinner because we’re afraid of that heavy, bloated feeling that follows. I used to skip my evening meal entirely whenever I felt a bit “off.”
However, this usually backfires. When you finally eat, your digestive system is often overwhelmed, leading to more gas. It also slows down your metabolism, making your gut sluggish. Instead of skipping, try smaller, more frequent portions. For example, a small bowl of soup is better than an empty stomach. Keeping things moving consistently is much easier on your system than the “feast or famine” approach.

I’m so guilty of this. I skipped lunch today because I felt bloated from breakfast, but now I’m starving.

The soup idea is good. I usually do a light chicken broth when my stomach feels tight.

I found that if I don’t eat, I get a headache, which just makes everything worse.

I’ve been doing this for years thinking I was resting my stomach. My wife keeps telling me to just eat a little bit of rice or something light, but I’m stubborn. Maybe it’s time to listen to her and this post!

Does the type of soup matter? I find creamy soups make the bloating way worse for me.

Ginger tea helps me if I feel too bloated to eat a full meal. It settles things down before I try a snack.

I started doing five small snacks instead of three big meals. It changed my life. No more afternoon slump or gas.

I’m 68 and my digestion isn’t what it used to be. I noticed if I skip dinner, I wake up with acid reflux anyway because of the empty stomach.

I tried skipping meals but then I’d be starving by 9 PM and eat a bunch of crackers, which is way worse than just eating a normal dinner.

What kind of soup do you recommend? I usually go for vegetable.

Gentle movement after a light meal works better for me than fasting. A 10-minute walk does wonders.

Good advice. I’ve noticed my energy levels are much more stable when I don’t skip. The feast or famine phrase is spot on.

Raw veggies are my enemy when I’m bloated. Steamed carrots or squash are much easier to handle if I’m trying to keep things moving.

Consistency is definitely key as we get older. Our bodies like a routine. Great post, Jim.
