Are we doing more harm than good with home earwax removal methods?

Many of us grew up thinking a cotton swab was the only way to keep our ears clean. However, using these tools is a common pitfall that often pushes wax deeper against the eardrum, leading to muffled hearing or painful impaction. Another mistake is turning to ear candling, which carries a high risk of burns and isn’t proven to work.

Instead of digging, try using mineral oil or saline drops to naturally soften the wax. If that doesn’t help, a professional microsuction appointment is a much safer alternative that preserves your long-term hearing health.

My audiologist always says ‘nothing smaller than your elbow’ should go in there. I learned the hard way after a nasty infection last year.

I tried those softening drops from the pharmacy last month. They work, but you have to be patient. It took three days before the plug finally moved.

Has anyone tried those spiral plastic tools they advertise on social media? They look safer than Q-tips but I’m skeptical.

Stay away from those spiral things, BeachBound72. Anything you stick in there blindly is a risk. I’m a retired nurse and we saw so many scratched canals from ‘safe’ home tools.

I just go to my GP twice a year for a flush. It’s covered by my insurance and the relief is instant. Why risk it at home?

I fell for the ear candling craze back in the 90s. It was a total disaster. Not only did it do nothing for the wax, but I ended up with soot in my ear canal. It’s definitely a pitfall to avoid. Now I just use a warm washcloth on the outside and leave the rest to the pros. It’s much less stressful than worrying about a fire near my head!

Good reminder. We often neglect the basics of ear hygiene as we get older.

My doctor actually recommended a couple drops of warm olive oil twice a week. It keeps the wax from getting hard in the first place. Much cheaper than the fancy kits.

I just had mine professionally cleaned yesterday and I can’t believe how much louder the TV is. I thought I needed new hearing aids, but it was just a wax build-up I’d been pushing in for years!
